Feeling Breathless? Exercise Might Be the Best Treatment you’re Not Using

If you live with a lung condition, it’s completely natural to want to avoid activity.
You feel breathless. You slow down. You do less.
But here’s the problem: when we stop moving, our muscles weaken. They become less efficient at using oxygen — and that actually makes breathlessness worse
It becomes a cycle:Breathless → Avoid activity → Weaker muscles → More breathless
The good news? That cycle can be broken.
What Is Pulmonary Rehabilitation?
Pulmonary Rehabilitation (PR) is a safe, supervised exercise and education programme designed specifically for people with lung disease
It usually involves:
· Two gentle sessions per week
· Walking and light strength exercises
· A supportive group of people who understand breathlessness
This is not a gym class. It’s tailored, evidence-based treatment delivered by specialist professionals.
And it works.
Around 90% of people who complete PR report improved activity levels and better quality of life .
People walk further. They feel stronger. They feel more confident.
Why It Really Matters
Without regular activity, many people with COPD and other lung conditions develop muscle loss (sarcopenia) - which increases frailty and reduces independence.
Exercise protects your strength.
· It reduces hospital admissions.
· It improves mood.
· It helps you manage your condition rather than feeling controlled by it
>> If you haven’t done PR yet, speak to your GP or respiratory team about referral. It is one of the most effective treatments available for lung disease — and it’s free on the NHS.
Finished PR? Don’t Stop There.
PR is usually a time-limited course. But your muscles don’t stop needing exercise when the programme ends.
That’s why continuing activity is so important. Without it, strength can gradually decline again — and breathlessness can creep back
At Breathe Easy North Staffs, we offer BENS X — ongoing, supported exercise sessions designed especially for people living with lung conditions.
BENS X helps you:
· Maintain the gains you made in PR
· Keep your strength and endurance
